Belarusian Traditional Clothing

Hi! My name is Lilia, I am a Belarusian artist and illustrator and I am glad to present my series of illustrations to you. In this series, I have transferred the traditions of the female Belarusian costume into an illustration. Hats, skirts, blouses, as well as ornaments differ in each type (style) of the Belarusian costume depending on the geographical region to which it belongs. In Belarus there are more than 16 styles of Belarusian traditional clothing. Since the issue of national identity in Belarus is acute, I decided to create this project that will show Belarusian traditions in artThe illustrations are based on photographs from a book by Belarusian ethnographer and professor Mikhail Romanyuk.
 

Kobrynski style
Kobrynski style is the style of Western Polesye region. A lot of attention in this costume is paid to the ornament and its detailed elaboration. Kobrynski against the background of other styles stands out for its monumentality, scale and completeness of forms.


Krasnapol'ski style
Krasnapol'ski style is the clothing of  Dnieper river region. It has its own unique ornamental solution on the sleeves of a women's shirt. I this clothing big number of compositional variations for the placement of the ornament. 


Kalinkavicki style
Kalinkavicki style is the folk clothing of an East Polesye region. It is considered the pinnacle of the art of Belarusian folk costume. The costume is dominated by different colors, including crimson, cornflower blue, burgundy, ochre and black. It has a predominantly geometric ornament (squares, rhombuses, horizontal stripes) has a feature in the form of a velvet turn-down collar, which makes the image of the decoration poetic and refined.


Mahilyowski style
Mahilyowski style is the clothing of Dnieper river region. The patterns in this clothing are dominated by red with small patches of black. Simple and minimalistic against the background of the rest of the styles, white color prevails in the suit.


Buda-kashaleuski style
Buda-Koshelevsky stlyle is the is the clothing of Dnieper river region. Stunning in its elegance, it has a vertical silhouette, a feature of embroidery is minimalism, sophistication and purity of lines. The sleeves of the shirt are quite wide, the main colors of the corset are black and dark blue. The skirt in this outfit has a dark red color, which is complemented by a black stripe. In traditional costume embroidery was performed mainly using black and white colors and had a geometric shape.


Davyd-haradocka-turauski style
Davyd-haradocka-turauski costume is a style in Belarusian costume of an East Polesye region. Features: archaic images, unique and original headdress "golovushka", corset, jewelry.


Liahavicki style
Liahavicki style is the clothing of central Belarus. It has an original headdress, which was often decorated with bunches of greenery and bouquets of flowers. Traditions of different regions (Central Belarus, Eastern and Western Polesie) are intertwined in this outfit.


Puhavicki style
The Puhavicki style is a clothing of Central Belarus ethnographic region. It is distinguished by the finishing of details, the dominant geometric shape of the ornament, fabrics and embroidery. The ornament most often had a square or diamond-shaped shape. The headdress of the The Puhavicki style headdress was a bandage-towel (rushnik) made of linen, which was wound on top of the cap. There were more than 30 ways that woman used to wind a rushnik.


Turava-mazyrski style
Turava-mazyrski style is a clothing of East Polesye region. It is characterized by restraint, an abudance of white in suit.  A distinctive feature of the Turava-mazyrski style is mainly plant images used as patterns.​​​​​​​
